At least 13 international airlines have expressed interest in launching direct flights to Bali. These planned routes include connections from major countries such as China, Russia, Japan, India, and the United States. However, the proposals are still under consideration.

Handy Heryudhitiawan, General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Bali Airport, mentioned that airlines have requested time slots for regular flights. While some have made submissions, they have yet to initiate services. For the 2023 dry season, several airlines that secured slots last year are still absent from the market.

“They must reapply for approval, including schedules and aircraft type,Handy said. The airport is waiting for further confirmation of their plans.

Tjok Bagus Pemayun, Head of Bali’s Provincial Tourism Office, noted that out of the 13 proposed airlines, three or four are from China. Before the pandemic, Bali had direct flights from 15 Chinese cities, but none are operational at present.

Pemayun expects these routes to resume by March 2023. However, he could not confirm specific airlines or cities. Currently, Ngurah Rai Airport serves 24 international routes through 29 airlines. Pemayun believes the return of flights from China will help Bali meet its 2023 goal of attracting 4.5 million foreign tourists. China ranks as Bali’s second-largest source of international visitors.

South Korean Airlines Expand Direct Flights to Bali

Meanwhile, South Korean airlines Air Busan and Jeju Air will soon start offering direct flights to Bali. The growing demand from South Korean tourists has driven this expansion, according to Bali’s airport operator, Angkasa Pura I.

“Bali remains a highly sought-after destination for international travelers, stated Handy Heryudhitiawan.

Both South Korean airlines are preparing for operations, but exact launch dates are still pending. Jeju Air has already received approval to operate routes from Incheon and Busan to Bali.

Currently, Garuda Indonesia and Korean Air operate direct flights between South Korea and Bali. Ngurah Rai Airport now accommodates 33 international routes served by 36 airlines, along with 19 domestic routes offered by 13 airlines.

In the first quarter of 2023, Ngurah Rai Airport welcomed 5.1 million passengers, marking a 17 percent growth compared to the same period last year. The airport aims to handle 23.6 million passengers by the end of this year.

Data from Indonesia’s Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows South Korea ranked fifth among countries sending tourists to Bali between January and April 2023. During this period, tourist numbers from South Korea grew by 37 percent, totaling around 82,000 visitors.

In addition, Etihad Airways launched direct flights from Abu Dhabi to Bali in June, using Boeing 787-900 aircraft.
