The Importance of Staying Sober Before Getting a Tattoo in Bali

Tattoos are a profound form of self-expression, marking significant moments, beliefs, and memories on our skin. However, deciding to get a tattoo should be a thoughtful process, particularly when it comes to being sober. The experience of Rhiannon Cunningham, a London expat, highlights why it’s essential to have a clear mind when considering a tattoo.

Rhiannon recently shared her story on TikTok, where she revealed waking up with an upside-down Bintang beer bottle tattoo on her foot—a spur-of-the-moment decision made during a night out in Bali. Her video, which garnered over 60,000 likes, resonated with many, illustrating the dangers of making impulsive, alcohol-induced decisions.

Her story started with a casual night of drinking with a man she had just met. Despite previously advising a friend against getting “silly” tattoos on holiday, Rhiannon found herself making the same mistake. She recounted, “I met this guy for literally thirty minutes … we were like ‘f**k it, should we get a drunk tattoo together?’” This impulsive choice resulted in her waking up with a tattoo in Bali that she neither intended nor particularly desired.

The Power of Subconscious Thoughts

Interestingly, Rhiannon had earlier discouraged someone from getting a Bintang beer tattoo, deeming it a bad idea. Ironically, this thought lingered in her subconscious, leading her to get the same tattoo while drunk. She explained, “I think because I had that in the back of my head, in my subconscious, that is why today I’ve woken up with a Bintang tattooed on my foot. I don’t even drink beer.”

Her regrets didn’t stop there; she also ended up with a red heart tattoo on her other foot, further highlighting the night’s spontaneous, alcohol-fueled decisions. Reflecting on it, she joked, “Apparently, I just want to be tattooed absolutely everywhere now.”

Choosing the Right Bali Tattoo Studio

Rhiannon’s experience underscores the critical need to remain sober when making decisions as permanent as getting a tattoo. Alcohol impairs judgment, making individuals more prone to decisions they might later regret. Here are some key reasons to stay sober when getting a tattoo in Bali:

  • Clear Judgment: Alcohol can cloud your judgment, leading to choices you might not make when sober. This clarity is essential when selecting a design you will cherish forever.
  • Pain Management: Staying sober helps you manage pain better and communicate effectively with your tattoo artist, ensuring you can take breaks or make adjustments if needed.
  • Infection Risk: Alcohol can thin your blood, increasing the risk of bleeding and infection during the tattooing process.
  • Design Choice: Tattoos are permanent. Being in a clear state of mind ensures you choose a design you will be happy with in the long run.

When planning a tattoo in Bali, selecting a reputable studio is crucial. A quality tattoo shop will prioritize hygiene, professionalism, and artistry. Researching and visiting different studios can help you make an informed choice, ensuring a positive tattoo experience.
